Monday Morning Photo – Grey Heron Wading in Kenya

This long-necked bird is the embodiment of grace – quietly moving through the water on the hunt for fish. When it spots a possible meal, the sleek movement is interrupted by a jab at the water and a splash from the beak’s impact.

During the dry season, waters are low and the competition for food is intense. The pond in which this grey heron was fishing was surrounded by dozens of Maribou storks, so I’m sure any catch would be consumed on the spot or after a quick flight away.
