Ethiopian Gin Fizz

Although I have access to duty-free foreign liquor, I have been intrigued by the products of Ethiopia’s National Alcohol and Liquor Factory and was ready to give them a chance. At the equivalent of $4 USD per bottle, I can afford to experiment. Among other things, Ethiopians are exceedingly proud of their honey and their Ambo, the Rift Valley’s answer to Perrier. The refreshing Ethiopian Gin Fizz incorporates these national ingredients and uses exclusively locally-distilled spirits.

Here they are – Baro’s Dry Gin and Lemon Liquor.

Gin Lemon

The Lemon Liquor has a vaguely lemon-ish taste and a lively fluorescent tinge. The local honey was a nice addition as it balanced the citric flavors. For honey syrup, simply mix 2 parts honey with one part hot water. The honey syrup will keep in the refrigerator for a few weeks.

Honey

The finished product goes down smoothly and is a perfect summer drink (or dry season drink if you’re in Ethiopia).

Drink 1

2 ounces gin
1 ounce lemon liquor (watered-down limoncello is a suitable substitute)
Fresh squeezed juice of one small lime
1 teaspoon simple syrup
3 teaspoons honey syrup
1/3 cup sparkling water

Mixing Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with a few ice cubes. Shake. Pour strained mix into a glass with ice. Top off with a splash of the sparkling water and garnish with a lime slice.
